Choosing a compression profile
The Smallest profile prioritizes file-size reduction and is useful when an attachment limit matters. Balanced aims for a practical compromise between clarity and size. Higher Quality retains more detail for text, screen recordings, or scenes with fine motion, but it may produce a larger download. Compressing a video that is already highly optimized may yield only a small reduction.
What affects file size
Duration, resolution, frame rate, motion, and audio all contribute. A five-minute static presentation can compress more efficiently than a five-minute sports clip because rapidly changing frames require more data. Trimming unwanted time before compression is often the most reliable way to reduce size without lowering visible quality.
Privacy and limits
The video is temporarily uploaded for conversion because consistent H.264 encoding is performed by the Promptbox server. Temporary working copies are removed after processing. The upload limit is 600 MB, and slow connections or long high-resolution videos may take several minutes. Do not close the page while the progress indicator is active.
Common questions
Why is the result not much smaller? The source may already use efficient compression or contain complex motion that needs more data. Will compression remove audio? The output retains compatible AAC audio unless the source lacks audio. Can quality improve? Re-encoding cannot restore lost detail; its purpose is compatibility and reduced size. If processing times out, try a shorter clip or the Smallest profile. Play the complete downloaded file before deleting the source.
